Excuses

The other night a friend and I were talking and the topic of evangelism came up. He mentioned how one church goes door to door to witness to people. "It takes a special kind of person to do that," he said. I sat there agreeing because yeah, not all of us are born outgoing. (Me, for instance!) But then he said that people like them most likely often met with outright destain, and how people like him, with bad tempers, shouldn't go into those kinds of situations.

Wait a moment here! Since when does the Great Commission come with a disclaimer that excludes those with bad tempers? No matter where we go, there will always be those who will resist the Gospel or even put all their efforts towards making you fail. Does this mean we should stop witnessing altogether because some of us aren't good at dealing with those kinds of situations? I'm not talking about avoiding fruitless debates, but shying away from sharing the Gospel because of the chance you'll have someone not agree with you. Granted, some, I'd say most, of us have shortcoming on which we need to work. But who gives us the power to correct our behavior? Who is the One who speaks to people's hearts and opens them to the Gospel. Who is the One in control of the whole situation and always makes a way of escape so that we do not to have defame His name?

Is there a good excuse out there for not witnessing? No. The God whose power we proclaim is able to work through and with such misfits as us. There is no excuse for disobeying Him.
