In the news again...

This article on PHC is hilarious! Even funnier is some comments my classmates have made. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!:

"The article seemed awfully confused. We are smart, charming, and successful. We are narrow, clueless idiots who present a threat to the very structure of the universe. They like us. They hate us. -- Mainly, they don't know what to make of us. :-D" -LL

"I'm with L... That is THE most hilarious thing I've ever read in my entire life. Or at least for this week which has been dominated by homework. ;-)

The title itself cracked me up. Subtitle, rather. "The campus is immaculate, everyone is clean-cut and cheerful. But just what are they teaching at Patrick Henry College? And why do so many students end up working for George Bush?" It sounds like the opening to some weird science fiction novel where the nice, old grandparents are going to rip their face masks off at any minute to reveal the killer aliens they really are. lol. And, so the tone continues throughout the entire article. The writer seems incredulous and often feels compelled to throw in utterly meaningless remarks. Such as the emphasis on holding hands, and, as April said, the totally out of the blue comment that the entire student body is white. It's like the author is trying to say, "Hey, hey. It's not as innocent as it looks! Look at that, look at that! Wackos..."

lol, and yes, the constant references to how pleasant we are. Yes, we are horrible, right-wing conspirators, but, aside from that devious fault, we are surprisingly pleasant. Probably alarmingly pleasant in the author's eyes. ;-) We do seem to be alarming...

And they chose a terrible quote from Mr. Farris. The only quote from him they include and it sounds like he's just trying to throw everyone into a big grinder to hope a winner pops out!

And I appreciated their little dig at our belief in Satan. Which the author assumes will be nonsense to most of his readers.

Oh, and then his overt comparison of PHC to Pleasantville and thus a place of "bland, unquestioning niceness."

"For all the warm welcomes, for all the smiles, for all the openness, there is something a little unsettling about Patrick Henry and the cultish devotion of its students. "

What they really mean: We're just waiting for them to rip their face masks off. We know the truth...

"But, to its critics, what is perhaps most striking about this small, influential college with its self-confidence and focus, and its links with America's neoconservative political elite, is its utter transparency. Patrick Henry College is an institution devoted to spreading its word, spreading its view of the world, and helping to place its students in positions of authority and influence. And it does so in plain view. "

What they really mean: Quacks like that should hide! What they're doing is so obviously reprehensible! They're doing it in the open! Why aren't Christians and Republicans hiding in the underground! What's the matter with them!" -JS
